How to Install a Shift Sensor on a Bafang BBSHD (Rear Installation)
Muj from Golden Motor guides you through the process of installing a shift sensor on a Bafang BBSHD mid-drive motor to protect your drivetrain during gear changes.
The primary purpose of the shift sensor is to cut power to the motor while you are shifting gears, which reduces excessive wear and tear on your chain and drivetrain.
Step 1: Prepare for Installation
There are two main ways to install a shift sensor: on the front or the rear shifter. This guide covers the rear installation. (Look out for an upcoming video on front installation.)
Begin by loosening and removing the shifter cable from your rear shifter. Muj’s cable is extra long because it was recently replaced, without a crimp, to accommodate the shift sensor installation.
Generally, you start by removing the crimp, loosening the cable housing, and taking the housing off.
Step 2: Remove the Shifter Cable
Depending on your shifter model, you might need to remove a small screw to free the shifter cable.
Loosen the necessary parts and separate the shifter housing from the shifter body. The cable should slide out smoothly once you have enough slack.
It’s recommended to pull the entire cable out to avoid accidentally cutting the housing or cable when making cuts.
Step 3: Prepare the Cable Housing for the Sensor
The shift sensor will require a portion of the cable housing to be cut out.
Measure the length of the shift sensor and cut a piece of the housing to the same length. Use clean cutters designed for cable housing to get a neat cut.
Save the end piece of the housing you cut off to use later.
Step 4: Reassemble the Cable
Slide the shifter cable back into the cable housing. It should come out the other end easily.
Now, insert the shift sensor into the cut-out section of the housing, ensuring the plug faces towards the motor.
Slide the sensor through gently—it may meet some resistance but should fit snugly.
After threading the sensor in, replace the end piece you saved earlier or use a spare cap if you have one.
Step 5: Final Adjustments
Push the cable back through the spring and into place, like a normal shifter cable.
Once the cable is properly tightened with the nut, you can crimp the end of the cable to secure it.
Finally, connect the shift sensor plug to the corresponding gear sensor port on your Bafang motor.
This completes the rear shift sensor installation on the Bafang BBSHD. This device will help protect your drivetrain during gear changes by cutting power to the motor.
