Golden Motor often receives inquiries from customers wanting to identify which version of the Magic Pie motor controller they have. This guide will help you distinguish between the Magic Pie 3, Magic Pie 4, and Magic Pie 5 controllers by examining key physical and functional features such as wiring, connectors, and housing design.

Magic Pie 3 Controller

The Magic Pie 3 controller has the following distinguishing features:

Bottom Plate: Silver metal plate sealed with epoxy.

Phase Wires: Push-style spade plugs (flat metal tabs).

Hall Sensor Plug: A 6-pin black plug.

Controller Body: Silver with a black groove or indentation.

Wiring Housing: Cylindrical and smooth.

Wiring Connector: Ends in an 8-pin female plug.

This older version has a rounder, more basic design and is not compatible with the newer wiring harnesses used in later models without modification.

Magic Pie 4 Controller

The Magic Pie 4 introduced major changes in design and plug format:

Bottom Plate: Fully sealed epoxy bottom, no silver plate.

Phase Wires: Uses screw-in connectors rather than spade plugs.

Hall Sensor Plug: A small white plug.

Controller Body: Completely silver with no black groove.

Wiring Housing: More square-shaped with textured ridges.

Wiring Connector: Uses a 10-pin male plug (you can see the pins).

These enhancements improved durability and connectivity. The plug system changed from female (in MP3) to male, and the controller housing became more rigid and structured.

Magic Pie 5 Controller (Current Model)

The Magic Pie 5 builds upon the Magic Pie 4 but reverts some of the plug styles found in MP3, while maintaining other MP4 upgrades:

Bottom Plate: Sealed with epoxy (same as MP4).

Hall Sensor Plug: 6-pin black plug (same as MP3).

Phase Wires: Push-style spade plugs (same as MP3).

Controller Body: Silver with black groove indentations.

Wiring Housing: Same squarish, ridged design as MP4.

Wiring Connector: Still uses a 10-pin male plug.

The key functional difference between Magic Pie 4 and Magic Pie 5 is that the Magic Pie 5 includes Bluetooth capability. This allows you to plug in a Bluetooth dongle and connect to your phone using the Golden Motor smartphone app. Your phone can serve as the controller display.

Upgrade Note: If you already have a Magic Pie 4, you can upgrade it to a Magic Pie 5 simply by replacing the controller — they are mechanically and electrically compatible.

Visual & Structural Summary

When viewed side-by-side:

Magic Pie 3 has a smooth, cylindrical housing.

Magic Pie 4 and 5 both have a more rectangular housing with visible ridges.

Wiring harness:

MP3 harness has a plug that leads directly to a breakout with connections for throttle and two brakes.

MP4/MP5 harness splits into four separate plugs from the housing — one for the throttle, two for the brake levers, and an optional one for lights/horn.

Final Notes

If you're unsure which model you have, look for the shape of the housing and plug type.

If you have an 8-pin plug and smooth housing, it's likely a Magic Pie 3.

If you have a 10-pin plug and squared housing, it's either a Magic Pie 4 or 5.

For Bluetooth functionality, you must have the Magic Pie 5.
